Female Cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats in 7 years. 1 female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in just 6 years. These 2 overwhelming statistics are furnished by the Humane Society of the United States and published in Spay Day USA information. The facts, published by Spay Day USA go on to say that 12% of the dogs surrendered to shelters were purebreds. An alarming 55% of the surrendered dogs were unaltered and 47% of the cats were unaltered as well.
Sadly, one of the top ten reasons for turning their pets in to
shelters is the fact that they cant find homes for littermates.
This tragedy is this problem is something that is totally preventable.
And the sad part is that over half of these pets do not find homes
and often this results in healthy pets being euthanized.
Spaying and neutering can reduce
the risk of certain diseases such as mammary and testicular cancer.
Neutering male animals makes them less likely to roam, thus reducing
the risk of injury or death from being hit by a car.
Neutering males usually stops or prevents territorial spraying.
Neutered males usually fight less and they are less likely to
get lost in searching for a mate.
Spayed animals do not go into heat or need to be confined to avoid
pregnancy.
Unaltered pets can cause damage to your home when trying to get
outside and unaltered males can dig under fencing to mate with
intact females.
Spayed and neutered animals are loyal and protective.
Spaying and neutering, although they appear to be costly, can
often be found at reduced prices. And also consider the price
of newborn puppy and kitten care. Shots, deworming and care of
the mother all add up.
And then there is the problem of finding safe homes for a litter which can be quite large. If you cant find homes, then you need to be prepared to accept responsibility, both physically and financially for the care of the pets.
