First Aid InformationIt is important to be prepared to take care of your own animal either during a disaster or in case of an injury. Listed on the next page are some basic items, recommended by veterinarians, to have in your disaster kit. This way you will be equipped to help your pet in case he/she requires first aid. (Quantities for emergency purposes should be based on the number of animals you have in your household.)
In addition to the supplies on the next page, you should have a first aid guide for companion animals. There is a wide selection of books and video tapes that can be purchased at any pet supply or book store that will show you how to take care of an injured animal.
You should keep all the items in a water proof container with your own disaster supplies. This would also be a good place to keep a copy of your companion animal's medical records.
Included with your supplies should be a muzzle, as most animals, when they are injured, have a tendency to bite. Muzzles can be purchased at any pet supply store, in an assortment of sizes. In case you do not have a muzzle when one is needed, makeshift muzzles can be easily made out of pantyhose or other items you might have on hand.
One very important thing to remember is that an injured animal is scared and will bite. And also remember to stay calm not only for yourself, but your pet will sense your fear and react accordingly.
