Back in 1993, before I discovered the wonderful profession of pet sitting, I was thinking about a job at the local Humane Society. Now anyone that knows me realizes this would have been a very huge mistake on my part. Anyway, one day in August I went in to apply for a job and they were too busy to talk...so I wandered into the adult cat room. Well there she sat in this tiny cage with these huge copper eyes that were saying "take me home, I don't belong in this cage". Well we sure didn't need another cat...but this was definitely love at first sight. I took her out of the cage just to be sure she really wanted to go home with me, well she proceeded to give me little kitty cat kisses on my nose. I put her down just to see what she would do and she came back to me. So home we went and I elected not to apply for a job there.

Now the next hurdle was telling Tom as we had decided that we already had a houseful . He was out of town for the week, so I just let Gizzy settle in for the week and decided that she could tell him when he returned. After all she had more charm than I could ever hope for. Well when he got home, she proceeded to win him over-it took about 10 seconds as she gave him little kitty kisses too!

She came to us with the name of Ezmerelda-now that didn't flow out of our mouths very easily and she never responded to it. So we assumed she had a nickname. We tried Ezzie and that turned into Gizzy. All the Humane Society could tell us was that she was brought in by people that said they couldn't keep her any longer, that she had belonged to a neighbor. She obviously had been a very pampered cat! We decided that she belonged to an older person that went into the hospital or a nursing home and they were never coming home again. That must be why the neighbors were keeping her and couldn't (or wouldn't) any longer. It was their loss as she has been the most wonderful "fur kid" anyone could ever have! We imagine that she ate off of fine crystal and china and had the best of everything. I wanted so much to find the previous owner and tell her/him that she had a great home and not to worry-but that was not an option.

Now we had decided that when we moved into our new home that we would have just one room that our fur kids did not live in, of course, they were always welcomed when we were in there and could supervise (just not to take over and live on the sofa so we had to sit on the floor!)...well in enters Gizzy..she took over the living room and allowed Tom and me to share it with her! Actually her favorite activity was to crawl on Tom’s chest at night and watch TV and groom his face until his nose or chin was raw from her little tongue.

The last few weeks of her life she found enjoyment in SUPERVISED outdoor excursions and car trips as long as a vet office was not involved. She enjoyed watching the lights and traffic-especially the big rigs!

She came into my life for a reason. She was adopted in August of 1993 and my mother passed away in October of the same year. She helped me through a very difficult time of my life. She gave me a constant supply of purr and kitty kisses. Also both of our kids moved away since Gizzy joined our family and she was there by our sides to help us through this transition. So I know that we found one another for a very special reason.

She had been recently diagnosed with renal failure at too early of age. So as I write this today, I know that her previous owner and her have been reunited and Gizzy (or Ezmeralda) is telling her all about the last 5 years of her life with us. But I also know that she will be there to greet us when our time on earth is over as well.

Giz, you will live in our hearts forever!

Tom and I would like to thank Michelle King for making the banner for Gizzy's page.

Gizzy, you were much too young to leave us.
